AMRITSAR: Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) has appealed to the Pakistani government for withdrawing the condition of possessing a passport as an identification document for a day-long pilgrimage to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, in its country.
In a release issued here on Monday, SAD(D) president Paramjit Singh Sarna said, “The rule is to have the government authenticate identification; then why to ask for passport and not aadhar card?”
He added that 75% of people didn’t’ have the passport and were deprived of visiting the Guru’s abode across the border.
Sarna, who has undertaken various karsewa (voluntary service) projects of gurdwaras and sarais in Pakistan, said SAD(D) would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard as well.
Notably, the Kartarpur Corridor connects Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of India’s Punjab with Kartarpur Sahib in the Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab. It was inaugurated on November 9, 2019, but was closed due to Covid 19 on March 16, 2020. The Kartarpur Corridor was reopened on November 17, 2021, allowing the faithful to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan and return on the same day.
During his recent visit to Kartarpur Sahib, Sarna observed that a large number of devotees arrived up to ‘Darshan Sthal’ (the place situated on the international border at Dera Baba Nanak) for having a glimpse of the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan with the help of binoculars.
“We have also proposed the live streaming of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib on life-size screens installed at the Darshan Sthal so that the followers of Baba Nanak could have uninterrupted view of the religious services performed in the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib,” said Sarna.
